Social Media Recap: What Went Down in Social Media

The Social Media world was buzzing with activity this past week, here’s a recap on some of the major happenings.

Earlier this week, Facebook announced an upgrade to their year old lookalike audiences’ ad initiative. The latest update allows advertisers to identify, track and target people with similar characteristics to those who visit their websites, use their mobile apps, or like their Facebook Page. This step will enable advertisers to target potential customers more effectively.

Pinterest is also jumping onto the social media advertising bandwagon. Pinterest plans to roll out the ads in the second quarter and serves as a great opportunity for marketers. Some believe that Pinterest’s image focused look is tailor made for advertisers. Pinterest CEO, Ben Silbermann said that the promoted pins will be tailored to users interests and will be marked transparently to distinguish them from organic content.

Micro-blogging giant, Twitter announced two new features that make photo sharing on Twitter more social and engaging.  Users can now tag people in their photos and include up to four photos in one tweet. This update will allow users to tag up to 10 people in a picture without affecting the 140 character limit. The multiple photo upload feature has a limit of four photos and automatically creates a collage for the pictures. This feature is already available on the iPhone app and is coming soon to Android, and twitter.com according to the official Twitter blog.

Instagram celebrated its 200 million users on Wednesday. Instagram reported that it acquired 50 million of these users in the last 6 months. This upsurge in users definitely proves that Facebook cracked a great deal when it purchased Instagram for $1bn.
